Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was readying for a trip to China in January this year when he asked the chief of the external intelligence agency (RAW) for a briefing about his assessment on the current Chinese leadership. The RAW chief prepared a report which talked about Jiang Zemin and Zhu Rongji. Interestingly both these leaders, former president and the premier of China respectively, retired in 2003.

India has a 7,516 km coastline, 1197 islands and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) spanning 2.02 million sq km, which is expected to go up to almost 3 million sq km after the delimitation of the continental shelf. Now what resources do we have to monitor the coasts?

Various agencies monitor the coastal areas in different states but here too there is lack of coordination. Agencies like the Coast Guard severely lacks funds.

The Malegaon blast case investigation has come under the scanner again with BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L K Advani alleging ill-treatment of Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS).

Sadhvi Pragya was arrested by the ATS in connection with the Malegaon blast.
